Robin,

In Q1 or Q2 2013, Greenplum is going to become part of a new EMC/VMware software group, Pivotal Initiative (PI), headed by Paul Maritz (see: http://bit.ly/UPk03F).

Maritz grew VMWare to what it is today.

From what I can tell, EMC is going to keep IIG where it is for now (see http://www.brilliantleap.com/blog), I say this because the employee count for PI and where each employee is coming from has already been announced and IIG appears to be untouched.

As a result, I think it's unlikely that Greenplum and Documentum will be doing anything together any time soon. (Greenplum will be too busy integrating with VMware technologies.)

BTW, have you ever heard Greenplum talk about Documentum? When and in what context? I think that Documentum enthusiasts are more interested in Greenplum than the other way around.

In any case, I'm sure Rick D. knows where IIG stands, has anyone posed this question to him? If you guys give me enough reason to do so. maybe I will.

I agree with your article. I believe there is one more essential component that EMC must work on to make onDemand more feasible. One word... TRUST. The enterprises data will be within EMCs control. Some customers that I have worked with in the past have utilized Documentum from version 2 or 3. Late history proved that, while the product was fairly stable and reliable, if you were smart, you trusted their support or product development organizations about as far as you could throw them. ("Well, with your bad knee Ed, you shouldn't throw anybody..." - Grace from Ferris Buellers Day Off.) Trust is built with time, (non-biased) testimonials and providing the transparency to IT organizations to prove that your landscape is better than theirs.

Hi Kris, that depends. Logging into webtop always results in new DFC sessions being requested however webtop/dfc pools sessions on the client (webtop) side and releases them to the pool after 5 seconds inactivity. A new dfc session request will pick up any available sessions from the pool. As long as the client_session_timeout has not been reached on the content server the session just reuses the associated db session.

Hi Robin,

The number of times I've had to remind myself how to do two's complement when figuring out data tickets - thanks for sharing :-)

By the way, in the windows 7 calculator, if you chose 'Hex' mode, and 'D-Word', paste the hex path and click 'Dec' it will do the conversion for you.

Cheers,

One client site I have worked with has repositories 15 years old, and they have been upgraded multiple times. When a Documentum repository grows to millions upon millions of rows of data and content, the time to upgrade grows from mildly irritating to horrific, with collateral operational impact, due to downtime, costing the business hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Database tuning and cleaning the repository of unused content is critical. Disposing of old content helps shorten the upgrade process. When it is coupled to a strong records management process, it also helps reduce your business' liability when exposed to searches and audits.
